Overall, I would say that even though a placement year can be challenging and hard at times, it is definitely worth it and extremely valuable. It is unbelievably satisfying when you are told at the end that the company want you back.
“I chose this course specifically because of the sandwich year option. I liked the fact that I would have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience to prepare for my future career. Employability has always been an important aspect of my degree and I felt that by studying business I would be able to apply for a wide range of jobs.
After looking at various options I found a placement with Marks and Spencer for which I had to complete an online application. After this, I attended an assessment centre in London which involved completing group work, a role play exercise and a presentation, followed by a general interview.
I was really happy to have been successful and gained a twelve month placement with the company. Throughout my time there I really enjoyed working with lots of different people and benefited from gaining advice from experienced staff, other placement students, graduate trainees and training managers.
When I look back I can see the vast difference in my confidence. Although it was a demanding year it was definitely worth doing as I now feel more assured of my abilities, that I have enhanced my people skills and expanded my technical abilities for work.
I have been offered the chance to return to M&S after I have completed my degree, which I am really happy about. I will be undertaking an extremely good job with a reputable company that has invested a lot of time and effort in my development.
Long term, I also want to complete my Chartered Institute of Management training so I have the option of working in accountancy, which is a goal I will continue to work towards.
Overall, I would say that even though a placement year can be challenging and hard at times, it is definitely worth it and extremely valuable. It is unbelievably satisfying when you are told at the end that the company want you back.”
