Debbie Walker

BSc (Hons) Child Health and Wellbeing

One of the reasons I chose this degree was because I hoped it would open up a career path for me, and that is just what’s happened.

“Before coming to Edge Hill University I was juggling really long working hours and a young baby. I’d always thought that I’d like to work with children and this seemed just the right time to make the change.

I researched my options and was really impressed by both the university, its awards, reviews and recommendations, as well as the course itself. It seemed really well rounded and suited me at a time when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do next.

Coming back to education after so many years away meant I didn’t know what to expect from the course, but it’s been much better than I expected. The subjects are really varied with topics including safeguarding, child development, law and ethics, nutrition, and vulnerable children. I’m graduating with so much more knowledge and confidence.

One of the reasons I chose this degree was because I hoped it would open up a career path for me, and that is just what’s happened. I did a work placement at Home Start, a family support charity, which made me realise that I want to go into social work.

Working with professionals also helped me to see how the skills I have gained on the course translate to the real world. I enjoyed the experience so much I’m still there, two years later. I was also able to tailor my dissertation to my interest in the effects of parental contact on abused children, and will be starting an MA in Social Work at Edge Hill in September.

Throughout my degree there was fantastic support from my tutors, which helped me to win a scholarship for high achievement under personal adversity. They really couldn’t do more for you.

My advice to other students would be to take the opportunity to go for assignment feedback when it is offered. When I got my final result, which was a first, my course leader was absolutely made up for me. The tutors genuinely do care about you.”
