It has been incredible to be able to bring my two passions together.
“I was originally going to attend a university close to my home, but the course on offer at Edge Hill persuaded me to travel further afield. Other universities offered performing arts, which covered a lot, but dance and drama really focuses on what I want to do.
The modules available really drew me to this course as I was eager to study some design elements. Along with studying jazz dance, musical theatre and site-specific performance you can study subjects including prosthetic make up, scenographic costumes and costume for performance. This design aspect has really opened my mind to future possibilities.
For the musical theatre module I had to sing opera for an audience that included my family and friends, I originally thought the performance was going to be ‘Grease’ or something! It was insane and I never thought I’d be able to do it, but I did. Experiences like these have completely changed my ideas about what I’m going to do when I graduate and given me some great networking opportunities.
Our ensemble performances have definitely been my favourite aspect of the course. You meet and work with students who are on the same wavelength as you, but who bring something different to the performance, and together you create a connected whole. Before you come to university you are told that you will meet your best friends here and I’ve found that to be true. You don’t realise that there are so many people who are into the same things as you and that gives you so much confidence.
Overall I’ve been really impressed by how well dance and drama are actually fused during our classes. There is so much more interlinking than I thought possible, and it has been incredible to be able to bring my two passions together.”
