Being able to tailor the degree to my specific scientific interest has definitely been beneficial for my future plans.

“Because biology is a very hands-on subject it is something that I’ve always enjoyed. I was inspired by radio podcasts and documentaries to pursue a degree in the subject, specifically ecological aspects, as I feel there are so many things you can do with it.

I chose Edge Hill University because, although it is a large campus, it has a real community feel and everything you need is in one place. Because of this you get to know lots of people which makes for a great social life.

As for the course itself, for me the best thing about it is the field-based modules we have undertaken. I have been to Wales on a freshwater ecology programme as well as to Scotland looking at marine Biology. I am very much looking forward to going back to Wales to study my biodiversity and conservation module later this academic year.

My favourite module so far has been Field Botany which involved visiting various sites to identify flowering plants, mosses, grasses and sedges, something I am particularly interested in. These trips mean we gain lots of practical experience in a fun and interesting way, bringing to life the knowledge we receive in our lectures.

The other great thing here is the support. The tutors are always on hand to give advice and guidance with an example of this being when we had to organise our placement module. Knowing that I am a keen ecologist, staff in the department took the time to help me secure my placement at a local nature reserve, which turned out to be a brilliant experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. I learned a great deal from my time there, from conservation management techniques to the importance of visitor care.

Looking back, being able to tailor the degree to my specific scientific interests has definitely been beneficial for my future plans. As I approach my third year I know that careers in the ecology field are the option that I wish to pursue.
