“When undertaking work experience at a local youth theatre, which was part of my final year acting degree, I was amazed at how much pleasure I got from seeing the children grow and develop.
Following one of the performances I was asked by a head teacher to direct at their school and it was this experience that made me decide that a career in teaching was definitely for me, so I joined the PGCE in Primary Mathematics Education at Edge Hill University.
One of the best things about the course has been the well-supported teaching placements that trainees undertake within a wide range of outstanding settings. It is these experiences that are so valuable to us all when looking for jobs after graduation.
During my placements I have delivered shows, given presentations, written stories and built websites with the children, all of which has provided me with great learning experiences. From delivering a puppet show and producing animations, to teaching phonics and helping to run the school choir, everything has been so beneficial in enabling you to think creatively about children’s learning.
The reflective nature of the PGCE also means that you have the opportunity to think about the effectiveness of all the different things you have learnt and I still find it hard to believe the huge leaps I’ve made during the past nine months.
As I approach the end of my studies I look back with great fondness and how amazing it has been to work with so many like-minded people. It is very rewarding to have now secured my first teaching position and I am looking forward to starting work in a primary school close to where I live in Wigan.
In the future I would like to be a subject coordinator and will always endeavor to use creative teaching to engage the children within my class.”
