Counselling and Psychotherapy student

Edge Hill University's emphasis on combining academic excellence with practical experience truly captured my attention. The counselling and psychotherapy programme at Edge Hill really combines what we learn in theory with hands-on training, making sure we’re ready for professional practice.
I was first interested in psychotherapy and counselling as it brings together science and humanity in a special way, combining research, philosophical questions, and practical therapy. My interest in these subjects inspired me to study a degree in this area. I also had an interest in helping to improve mental health through the use of the MMV Moodscale, which I have created. I think that getting to know the basic processes behind psychological distress and healing can really make a difference for people and society overall.
Edge Hill University’s emphasis on combining academic excellence with practical experience truly captured my attention. I really connected with the university’s reputation for having a supportive and inclusive learning environment, as well as its emphasis on developing practical skills for the real world. The counselling and psychotherapy programme at Edge Hill combines what we learn in theory with hands-on training, making sure we’re ready for professional practice. Also, the chance to learn from staff who have real-world experience in addition to their academic background caught my interest. Edge Hill’s focus on well-being and community really influenced my choice. It’s evident that the university cares about each person’s unique path and growth, which is something I find essential for my development.
My favourite thing about my degree is the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of others. Additionally, I appreciate the supportive and reflective learning environment that fosters self-awareness and social interaction. I am grateful for John Marsden, my personal tutor from year one, without whose nurturing and encouragement I would never have attained the success or gained the knowledge and experience I was opportune to be involved with.
Studying at Edge Hill has given me multiple opportunities. I secured an internship during my first year where I collaborated on a research project. This study was peer-reviewed and published last July 2024. In my second year I assumed the role of Student Union President for the faculty and was later honoured with a nomination for the Student Hero award in 2024.
I have been prepared for careers in mental health, social work, education, human resources, and private practice. Degrees in counselling and psychotherapy focus on skills like active listening, empathy, problem solving, and communication, which are important in various careers. Getting hands-on experience through placements really helps build confidence and expand professional connections, and having the right qualifications and memberships adds to your credibility. In addition to therapy, companies are looking for graduates who have emotional intelligence and resilience, especially in fields like corporate well-being, coaching, and healthcare.
My advice to someone considering studying this degree at Edge Hill is to get involved with practical activities such as role-plays and placements, since they help develop important skills for your future work. It’s vital to connect with classmates and teachers because the atmosphere here is all about support and teamwork. Get ready for some serious self-reflection, because this degree will push you in both your studies and your personal life. It’s really important to take care of yourself since the course can be pretty tough emotionally, but Edge Hill has support services available if you need them. I would also advise to look into the course structure, accreditation, and potential career paths. Getting relevant experience, like volunteering in mental health settings, can really help build a solid foundation.
