Professor Sally Spencer completed her PhD on the role of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in clinical trials at St George’s, University of London, where she managed a research methods group focusing on the role of PROMs in clinical trials. She joined Brunel University in 2003 where she continued to work with industry on PROMs and delivered a range of postgraduate teaching programmes on research methods, evidence-based practice and patient-centred outcomes in healthcare. She joined Lancaster University in 2010 as Associate Director of the newly formed Lancaster Health Hub, a cross-sectoral collaborative research partnership with 9 organisations in the North West of England (5 NHS Trusts, 2 CCG’s, Univ of Cumbria and Healthwatch Lancashire). In 2015 she was appointed Director of Research for the Postgraduate Medical Institute based at Edge Hill University where she aimed to develop, support and grow collaborative research with external public and private sector organisations relevant to healthcare. Following successful growth of the Institute and broadening of the scope to encompass a range of multi-agency health persepctives,  it was restructured and relaunched in 2019 as the Health Research Institute, with Sally as the Director of the Institute. She has a strong track record of research funding and publication in high quality peer-reviewed journals, and is currently involved in a number of ongoing research council-funded studies. She is a member of the board at the Innovation Agency, the Academic Health Science Network for the North West Coast, and a member of the Liverpool City Region Health and Life Sciences board.
