MA Education (Early Years)

I chose Edge Hill because I had already received amazing teaching and support here throughout my degree and it was somewhere that already felt like home.
Since graduating with my primary teaching degree in 2017 I have become increasingly interested in early years teaching and how children develop through these years. Having taught children in key stage 1 for 3 years I wanted to find out more about this first step into the world of education; particularly the research, discourse and challenges around implementing it in the current social-political climate.
I chose Edge Hill because I had already received amazing teaching and support here throughout my degree and it was somewhere that already felt like home. Had I not been to Edge Hill before, I would have been attracted by the university’s commitment to development, support for students and high quality facilities.
Learning at MA level is different than undergraduate because of the new level of analysis and critical thinking that is required. Having tutors who are able to nurture this skill through discussions and brainstorming sessions has been invaluable to me.
The course has challenged me to refine my writing skills, being able to communicate more concisely and to a higher academic level.
I quickly found I am able to manage and pace my learning time to fit in with other commitments. The spacing of the sessions and suggested tasks in between them really keep me on track. I feel that I have become better able to manage my time, ensuring I balance a full time job, studying and a social life.
Being able to research a specific topic or issue that is meaningful to you is a great feeling! The most memorable moment of my degree so far has been the lightbulb moment when I decided what I wanted to focus on for my research project in the final year.
When I graduate I am hoping to use the knowledge gained to one day progress to working outside of the classroom in more managerial roles or potentially work as a consultant or trainer for schools.
It is incredibly rewarding and fun to study alongside likeminded people who are on the same journey as you. For anyone considering studying at Edge Hill, do it! Get to know the people on your course and share your ideas and research with them. Studying can be a team sport!
