Biography

Commenced working at Edge Hill University as a Lecturer in Nurse Education in November 2020- specialising within my field and background of Mental Health Nursing, though working as a staff member supporting and delivering teaching to current 3rd Year BSc (Hons) Nursing Programmes, MSc, MNSW and Non-Medical Prescribing Programmes.

In August 2023, I was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in Nurse Education (Mental Health) following successful Progression application in-house.

I am a Registered Nurse (Mental Health) with the NMC since 2003, as well as a Registered Independent / Supplementary Nurse Prescriber since 2012

I am also a Personal Tutor to a number of Students on the BSc (Hons) Nursing Programme, as well as being an Academic Assessor to Students in Practice on both BSc and MSc programmes.

I have completed the Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PGCTHE), in October 2022, and am a Fellow in the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

I have a vast experience of 18 years clinical practice as a Registered Nurse (Mental Health) in Acute Inpatient (PICU, Forensic), Community Settings (Assertive Outreach, CMHT, Early Intervention, Older Persons), Criminal Justice / Liaison and Diversion as well as Leadership and Management within CMHTs as well. This covers the whole adult lifespan working with Adults and Older Persons in my time in clinical practice. I have worked in East Anglia, South of England, Lake District and the North West of the UK as a Senior Nurse.

Qualified as a Non Medical Prescriber in 2012

In this role at Edge Hill to date, I have developed a great level of Leadership roles to date. This includes leading on the development of two key assessments in the final year of the BSc Nursing Pre-Registration Programme and working closely with the internal boards in relation to any changes and updates to these as well as managing the overall management of the assessment via allocation of timetabling, delegation to academic colleagues in relation to assessment timetabling, and engaging with external skateholders such as external examiners.

I am the Nursing Field Advisor in relation to establishing Mental Health nursing content within the entire pre-registration curriculums across the faculty. This entails my leadership in ensuring that the identity of Mental Health Nursing is instilled throughout the pre-registration programmes in line with the NMC (2018) Standards by working with other Field Advisors and developing a Symposia Group whereby external colleagues are invited to facilitate specific field-based learning to students. Furthermore, I delegate to other lecturers, the development of the Mental Health Field element to other years in the BSc Cohorts as well as the MSc and MNSW Programmes, and facilitate monthly meetings in a supportive / supervisory role in this regard.

Additionally I am a Year of Sudy Lead for the January BSc Nursing Year 3. I have the responsibiities of overall leadership and co-ordination with regards to the delivery of the Year of Study insofar of the day to day seamless running and delivery of the curriculum for Year 3. I work very closely with fellow Year of Study Leads and Programme Leads.

Research Interests

My Interests include

  • Mental Health Nursing Students experience of Community Mental Health Care and the implications of Safeguarding in Practice. How does this influence management of complex cases in practice ?
  • Experiences of Ethnic Minority Mental Health Nursing Students with pre-registration Nursing programmes, and their perception of virtual learning
  • Positive Benefits of using Simulation in Pre-Registration Mental Health Nurse Programmes.
  • Mental Health Student Nurses experiences and knowledge of Pharmacology and Medication Management / Optimisation throughout their programme – is this consolidated in clinical placements ?

I have submitted a paper (awaiting approval) in relation to Ethnic Minority Nursing Students experiences of using Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
