Megan Quail

Mres Researcher

Biology student Megan

Profile

Biography

Megan graduated with first class honours in BSc (Hons) Biology from Edge Hill University in 2020. Her dissertation focused on conservation detection canine efficiency, in the context of wildlife disease prevention. Alongside her degree, Megan works in the UK farming sector and has applied her scientific training to assess and improve the efficiency of her local farms- particularly in relation to livestock disease prevention. During her degree, Megan continued her ecological training through a two month ERASMUS traineeship at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, assisting projects that aimed to inform Swedish forestry practices. On her return, Megan gained a qualification in Basic Canopy Access Proficiency during her degree and developed an interest in canopy research.

In January 2021, Megan re-joined the department as an MRes student. Her research focuses on tropical epiphyte population genetics, concentrating on how landscape configuration in Southeastern Brazil influences the population dynamics of a widespread epiphytic bromeliad, Tillandsia recurvata (small ball moss).

Research Interests

  • Seed dispersal of three common epiphytic bromeliads: Tillandsia recurvata Tillandsia pohliana and Tillandsia tricholepis in Southeastern Brazil.
  • Population dynamics of the widely distributed epiphytic bromeliad Tillandsia recurvata in Southeastern Brazil.

Teaching

  • Demonstrator
  • Field to Fork (livestock farming systems) – Guest Lecturer
