If you’re not completely sure what you want to do in the future, but know you want a health related career, then this degree is for you. It is a wide-ranging course with a big choice of modules, including some child health and wellbeing options.
I was initially drawn to topics like safeguarding and social policy and they were both good choices. The safeguarding option in particular was relevant to my work experience module, which was working in a care home supporting residents who have dementia. It helped me to develop skills and experience for my CV and I’m now a lot more confident in a working environment.
My favourite part of the course has been the global perspectives module, where I compared HIV care in the UK and Africa. I learnt a lot and think I’d now like to work abroad, possibly in sexually transmitted disease care or with refugees. This course has left my career options wide open.
My dissertation was another good experience. I looked at male victims of domestic violence and was really helped by the dissertation writing sessions available through the library. I got a lot of good advice and the staff looked at drafts of my work before submission.
Throughout the course I have had a lot more support than I thought would be available. This was especially from my tutors, they really are there for you. The other students have been great as well, we have all bonded and are always there for each other.
Overall, it has been a brilliant experience that I would definitely recommend to anyone thinking about a career in health.
