Research Interests

Lorcan’s research focuses predominantly on the area of positive youth development through sport. The main aim of his research is to enhance young peoples’ development, health and well-being through sport and physical education. During his PhD, he developed and later published an original scale that assesses eight key life skills that young people learn through sport and physical education. The eight life skills are teamwork, goal setting, social skills, problem solving, emotional skills, leadership, time management and communication. Lorcan’s current research uses this scale to investigate how coaches and teachers can better promote the learning of life skills within sport and physical education. Additionally, future studies will investigate how developing life skills through sport or physical education can promote other positive outcomes such as health, well-being, and academic achievement.
