Ian is a teacher educator. He teaches primary science, geography (Strand Leader) and APD/professional studies on undergraduate and postgraduate primary ITE courses. Ian is a Link Tutor for both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees on professional practice.
Before entering the teaching profession, Ian completed a BSc (Hons) degree in geography at The University of Liverpool. He then went on to study for a PhD in physical geography (see publications). After completing a period of postdoctoral research, Ian completed a PGCE before going on to work in a variety of roles in primary schools including as a science subject leader, year leader and phase leader. His earlier scientific background fuelled his enthusiasm for learning about and developing high-quality scientific learning opportunities for children. He became responsible for mentoring and leading CPD opportunities for other staff.
Ian is interested in research-informed teaching in ITE and is in the process of building a literature review in this area in collaboration with other colleagues. Ian is also interested in how teachers address and challenge stereotypes of people and places through their teaching of primary geography.
