Research

Arising from her experience of working closely with LOTC providers and developing CPD and training opportunities for trainee teachers, Cait has a particular interest in teachers’ perceptions and experience of working with cultural institutions as part of their professional practice and potential training models.

Through her involvement in a number of different projects that involve learning in different settings and environments, as well as being a Beach School Practitioner, Cait is interested in the impact of Place Based Learning on children’s and teachers knowledge and understanding.

Cait is currently engaged with two research projects,

  • The impact of University Students habitus upon their perception and engagement with cultural institutions.
  • My Classroom is the Gallery: A collaborative pilot research project with the Tate Liverpool

Interests and achievements

Throughout Cait’s career, she has been involved in advocating and developing relationships and partnerships between the informal education sector and schools and settings.  In 2006 she jointly established the Liverpool Cultural Placement Programme Partnership between Edge Hill University Primary ITT the National Museums Liverpool Walker Art Gallery and the National Gallery.  Edge Hill University became the first regional Associate Partner of the National Gallery in 2007, developing an extensive bespoke training programme for 30 ITT students and schools annually in using art galleries and their collections.

Since 2009 the partnership with National Museums Liverpool has been further developed and extended to include an embedded jointly organised and led training day for all  Primary Undergraduate and PGCE ITT and HEFCE Programmes within the Department of Children, Education and Communities.

In 2006 Cait led the Museums Libraries and Archives (MLA) first NW regional pilot ITT Museum Placement at EHU.

2007-11 Led and developed the Y2 ITT Museum Work Based  Placements

2007-10 Member of MLA North-West Steering Committee for ITT in Museums

2007-10 EHU Lead on the Manchester Museum and Gallery Project in Education (MAGPIE) training young teachers in using museum and gallery collections in Manchester to raise attainment in children’s writing and core skills.

Cait enjoys working with a range of diverse educational settings supporting opportunities to promote their work through engaging with our students and programmes through a range of different activities such as providing student placements, student volunteering opportunities, delivering workshops and lectures and contributing to community events and conferences.

Since 2014 Cait has worked with Farming and Countryside Education NW in developing Initial Teacher Trainees’ understanding of farming and countryside education through delivering a one day Level 2 training programme to over 100 students.

Since 2016 Cait has co-ordinated the EHU Regional Learning Outside the Classroom Network which is affiliated to the National Council for Learning Outside the Classroom networks. The network is a collaborative partnership between the university, LOTC organisations (e.g. National Trust, RSPB, WWT Martin Mere, etc) and school Partners providing free support and CPD training to schools and LOTC providers across the Northwest to share and develop practice.

From September 2017 the EHU Regional LOTC Network has supported the development of a North-West regional  Coast and Beach School Network  for schools either located near to the coastline who are interested in developing opportunities to use their coastal locality as a curriculum resource or those wishing to become Beach Schools.

LOTC Consultant for EHU Partner Schools on the Isle of Man supporting schools in developing their lOTC provision.

Cait is an External Examiner for Outdoor Learning and Health and Well-Being at one Higher Education Institution and for PGCE in Primary Education at another.
