Research & Professional Practice
Karen’s research embodies the role of visual documentation in supporting self-reflection: embedding graduate employability via visual literacy. This work includes mentoring recent graduates and considers undergraduate teaching and learning strategies.
From a graduate perspective she works alongside Professor Helen Newall creating imagery and film which forms part of a touring exhibition located in theatres, arts centres, galleries and conferences. This includes the 12 Degrees North Photographic Collection and films (2014-16), Do You See What I See? and Disco(urse).Their exhibition addresses how imagery was used to facilitate dancers’ self-reflexive recognition, artistry and awareness of employability; and how the researchers’ own experiences during this process enhance the development of personal practice in documentary photography and film making.
Karen has recently developed a research partnership with Rosemary Bennett at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and this study focuses upon the impact of teaching styles and strategies with undergraduate dancers and non-dancers, through visual representation. Critical to the exploration are the notions of learning environments, mindfulness and the importance of relationships in the creative process. Their intersecting dialogue (facilitated via visual literacy and personal exchange) revolves around creative pedagogies aimed at embodied development through dance in both formal and informal teaching and learning contexts.
In March 2017, Karen was invited to deliver an Early Years guest lecture series at Monash University, which included first year pre-service education students and explored Rosemary’s methodological empowering of students through experiential privileging of their own movement histories. In November 2017 they delivered their current project presentation Intersecting Dialogues at the World Arts Alliance for Education conference; Engaging with Communities: Creative Pedagogies, at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Unpacking practice as research approaches to enhance the intersection of ideas, observations and discursive conversations has revealed an exciting opportunity to extend creativity and community values into a range of pedagogies of arts practices
Karen is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has excelled in the area of dance in education and community arts over a period of three decades, both in post as an advisory teacher/arts practitioner, and as an advocate for professional development in the North West. She currently advises a number of local authorities in curriculum development alongside Arts Award.
Funding and Awards
Karen has received funding for talent development and employability initiatives from Arts Council England and civic engagement projects from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Local Heritage Trust. She has been successful in securing awards for literacy development from both the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
Karen is a member of the Edge Hill University Employability Sub-Committee and a coordinator for E3i and Visualising Success. She currently chairs the departmental Employers Advisory Panel (EAP).

Current and Upcoming Projects
Karen is currently working with the Intersecting Dialogues research project alongside her collaborator Rosemary Bennett. During the coming year they are looking forward to exploring their ideas in teaching and learning and engage University of Monash and EHU students in a discourse framing teaching identity.
