Summer school strengthens ties between Edge Hill University and Ukrainian institution

August 15, 2023

Voices of Ukrainian research were heard at a Parliamentary event organised as part of an Edge Hill University summer school for early career researchers.

Researchers from Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University were welcomed by academics, politicians and experts as part of the summer school, arranged by Dr Jennifer Giblin under the umbrella of the Twin for Hope campaign which saw the institution paired with Edge Hill.

Academics from Edge Hill accompanied the researchers to the House of Commons for a research and networking event exploring Ukraine’s reconstruction and reparations organised by Dr Patrick Butchard, Senior Lecturer in Law, in collaboration with the House of Commons International Affairs and National Security Hub.

As well as visiting researchers, the event was also attended by Dr Olena Chub, who has been employed at Edge Hill as a Postdoctoral Fellow thanks to a £100,000 grant from Universities UK under the auspices of Twin for Hope.

Professor Oksana Senatorova flew in from Kyiv to present alongside Dr Chub at the event, while YMNLU’s Vice Rector, Professor Iurii Barabash presented virtually from Kharkiv.

Dr Chub has a brief to nurture the relationship between the two universities, helping plan joint activities from September 2023, and applying for further funds to facilitate their successful development.

She was joined at the summer school by 10 academics from YMNLU to attend sessions on international law, present on their research areas, prepare for the Parliamentary event and discuss future collaboration opportunities.

Dr Patrick Butchard helped organise a research and networking event as part of the summer school.

Along with colleagues at YMNLU, Dr Giblin and Dr Butchard have also secured a book contract with Routledge to publish an edited collection on international law and the Ukraine war.

The book will be co-edited by Dr Chub and Professor Senatorova, while five of the academics who attended the summer school will contribute chapters.

Dr Jennifer Giblin

“It was fantastic to be able to welcome colleagues from Ukraine to Edge Hill and exchange knowledge on research areas.

“We also discussed potential future collaborations to strengthen the bonds between our two institutions, including producing policy briefings and holding further online research sessions.

“We look forward to working closely together and further strengthening our partnership in the near future.”

“The parliamentary event was a great opportunity to learn from Ukrainian research on key issues stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as an opportunity to share specialist research and policy perspectives from the UK and Parliament.

“Our hope is that through these new connections, we can start collaborations that will help us in Parliament, in academia, and elsewhere to maintain that voice of Ukrainian research as we continue to inform and consider the next steps to Ukraine’s recovery.”
