Management of the Patient in Anaesthetic Settings HEA3183

Overview

This module has been developed in order to facilitate the development of knowledge, skills and underlying principles of safe and effective anaesthetic practice. It is designed to be inter-professional and is directed at practitioners working in the perioperative area participating in anaesthetic care. Module content is selected and designed to meet the knowledge and skills required to practice anaesthetic care across a broad range of surgical specialties.

Who is this module for?

There are two specific groups of students who would access this module:

  • The newly qualified nurse who needs to build on their skill and evidence base to underpin practice
  • The qualified practitioner who although has a breadth of practical experience has limited academic qualification or specific experience to support their practice.

Students must be registered with their respective professional bodies (NMC/HCPC). It is necessary for the student to be working in a clinical area that allows them to meet the learning outcomes. This module has a requirement that the student be assessed in practice. The practice assessment is derived from NHS for Scotland (2013) core competences. To demonstrate achievement of these competencies the student will require an allocation to an anaesthetic area (or areas) that encompass all the practice within the competencies. He/she must also be supervised by a mentor holding an anaesthetic qualification for the duration of the module. It should be stipulated that the clinical skills element (50%) within this course is ‘competency based’ rather than being based on a ‘minimum’ number of practice hours. Some Learners will have transferable skills which can be used to achieve the overall competencies while others will find some of the clinical skills required to be novel and may need to spend more time achieving them. Employers are strongly advised to facilitate Clinical Learning by enabling Learners to spend as much time as possible in Anaesthetic Practice’ in order to meet these skills.

What are the key aims of the module?

  • The overarching rationale for this module is to develop safe, competent and confident practitioners who can underpin their anaesthetic care with appropriate evidence.
  • The perioperative area continues to require practitioners to work across disciplines and obtain new skills in specialist areas. Anaesthetic Care is a specialist area in which highly dependent patients require competent skilled practitioners. There is therefore a sustained need for skilled and educated practitioners within anaesthetic care.
  • Practitioners accessing this module will normally have begun to develop reflective, analysis and ICT skills. This module will develop these skills to facilitate enquiry-based approaches thus engendering independent learning skills applied to anaesthetic care. Candidates will need to consider that the written element of the final assessment requires the ability to write at academic Level 6 (degree level) to successfully complete the programme. Academic support is available throughout but there is a strong emphasis on independent learning overall.

This module is normally studied over 11 sessions, one half day session per week over two semesters. The module overall takes 36 weeks.

How will I be assessed?

A practice assessment, an evaluative report and a 3,000 word essay.

On successful completion you will:

  • Achieve and apply competencies within the anaesthetic care practitioner’s role
  • Critically examine a range of evidence to determine best practice in anaesthetic care practice
  • Critically analyse an area of anaesthetic care practice appraising patient care and formulate an achievable action plan.
