Graduate success
The Civil Nuclear Police
Tom Cullen graduated from our Professional Policing degree, and has since secured a successful career with the Civil Nuclear Constabulary. His role as PC Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) involves providing armed presence at civil nuclear sites around the country, to police and protect the perimeter of such sites. Opportunities for practical learning and overseas networking gave him the skills and experience needed to succeed.

“My degree gave me a great understanding of law and how it is practically applied by the Police, which gave me a great advantage during my real-world Police training. Having so much prior knowledge made the training feel more like a refresher than actual training, because everything that was covered in training had already been taught during my degree.
During my final year of study, myself and some of my peers were lucky enough to travel to Germany to network with German trainee police officers. We got to see the facilities they trained in and visit a number of police stations where we met serving police officers. This was a great insight into how police forces train officers in another country.”

The Barrister
Adam Williams, an Edge Hill Law graduate, has found success as a self-employed Barrister practicing out of 4 King’s Bench Walk in London. He told us how his time at Edge Hill, and the support he received from his lecturers, set him up to succeed in his graduate career.

“My degree gave me the fundamentals to pursue a career at the Bar. Not only did it prepare me for the academic side of a career in law, but it also prepared me for the practical side by allowing me the opportunity to compete in advocacy tournaments both internally at the University and elsewhere. It must be said that the lecturers at Edge Hill work hard to take a practical approach to developing lawyer’s skills in all their students.”

The Graduate Police Officer
Ellesse Connolly secured herself a fantastic graduate opportunity with Lancashire Constabulary whilst in her final year of BSc (Hons) Professional Policing, Ellesse is excited and proud of her achievements so far, and has shared some thoughts about her experience at Edge Hill.

“My application for Lancashire Constabulary was a lengthy but rewarding process. I am immensely proud of myself and how far I have come, and I am so excited for the next chapter in my life to begin.
My degree has quite literally taught me everything I know about policing. The lecturers were outstanding, and they couldn’t do enough to support me and help myself and my peers to reach our goals. Edge Hill has taught me to believe in myself and has filled me with so much confidence, which definitely helped me to secure my graduate job.“

The Probation Officer
Kate Mannion completed her undergraduate degree at Edge Hill in Psychosocial Analysis of Offending Behaviour – and she loved it so much, she continued on to further study with our MSc Applied Management of Offending Behaviour. She tells us about the experiences she gained during her time with us, and how it set her up for her new role with the National Probation Service.

“As part of my undergraduate degree I completed a placement with Merseyside Community Rehabilitation Company (CRC/Probation). The experience I gained was really valuable as I was able to gain an insight into the role of a probation officer and more importantly work with and understand the journey and struggles offenders face when going through the Criminal Justice System.
The 3 biggest things I learned from my placement were: How to deal with challenging behaviours and individuals; How to approach and communicate with those who are in vulnerable states; The importance of recognising and understanding each person as an individual.”

The Graduate Student
Nicole Williams completed her undergraduate degree at Edge Hill in BA (Hons) Criminology, and found the subject area fascinating. She took her passion for learning and decided to pursue further study along her route to a graduate career. Nicole is currently studying a Master’s degree in Criminal Education, and tells us how her degree at Edge Hill set her up for success.

“I have never been confident with my writing or presenting skills, and university is a place that builds confidence without you realising. I felt totally different when I graduated. I was unsure about going to university to begin with because I didn’t know what I wanted to do in life, but taking the leap of faith has taught me how much I enjoy Higher Education.
The top 3 skills I have gained from my degree are; time management; critical and analytical thinking; leadership and teamwork. My favourite thing about criminology is that it has many different aspects to it, sometimes you learn about the law and others about the way of the world of crime. There is never a dull moment when studying criminology there will always be something interesting to learn about and leave you curious to know more.”
