There will also be opportunities for you to get yourself noticed by learning and networking with external professionals and by entering local and national competitions. This includes additional external opportunities abroad. By taking part in activities abroad, you will gain an enriched understanding of the complexities of European culture, a greater awareness of your communication abilities and significantly enhanced skills.

“Through my studies I’d developed an interest in supply chain management, which was something I had no idea about before, so I was really pleased to get a placement with Johnson & Johnson in their supply chain department. As well as learning how a large organisation works, I was lucky enough to be one of 30 employees worldwide chosen to take part in a project in Malawi. “The opportunity to work with Booths supermarket was one of the highlights of the course. The project was to raise awareness of Booths’ commitment to sustainability and it was done exactly as if we worked for a marketing agency. We were given a brief by the store manager, then had to apply what we had learnt on the course to produce a multi-channel campaign. We had to present our ideas to the client at the end, which was nerve-wracking, but we gained so much from the whole experience. You can write an essay about planning a campaign, but to have the opportunity to take a brief, work up a campaign and present it to the client is so much more valuable. Everything on the course is done with one eye on the job market.”

Throughout your degree and upon graduation, you will have gained both academic and real-life transferrable skills. You will have the knowledge, confidence, flexibility and skills to immediately become a valued and successful employee in the business world.
With employability skills embedded throughout our courses, we actively encourage our students to embrace any opportunities to gain work-related learning experience, with financial assistance often available through the EHU Student Opportunity Fund.
Personal development and employability
“Throughout the three years of their degree, we support every student with their personal development and employability skills. The key theme that we encourage and emphasise students to actively work and build upon, is the need to develop transferrable skills and an evidence base of why they would be a suitable candidate for a particular role. We strongly support students to take opportunities such as summer placements and sandwich placements that will allow them to enhance their skill bases for employment. During second year, students engage in a Mock Assessment Centre Day and in work placements, client projects or running their own small business initiative. All students enter third year with these transferrable skills very well embedded and are fully equipped to begin applying for graduate level jobs, continuing to receive the full support of staff.”Dr Susie Mariott,

The benefit of a sandwich year – a full year in industry – is that they help you to stand out to future employees as you develop significant work related skills – you may even get offered a graduate job with the company you undertake your placement with. When you return to complete your final year, you will be able to relate elements of the modules to the ‘real life’ situations you experienced.
“Marketing itself is such a broad field and having a wide knowledge of marketing activities helped me to understand a range of business situations. Perhaps the most influential part of my degree was the sandwich placement year that I took in the penultimate year of my studies. I feel that nothing is quite comparable to on-the-job learning, getting a sense of what it is like in a professional environment first-hand. Also, the Mock Assessment Centre Day prepared me for the versatile environment of graduate schemes as you need to learn fast, deliver, and rotate to a different division to do it all over again. Since graduating, I am currently on my first rotation as a Business Analytics Manager at Vodafone in London. This involves identifying potential issues and finding ways to improve or mitigate the adversity that is best in line with the company’s resources. If you are able to, take a sandwich placement year. It is the best thing to springboard you into a graduate role after your studies.“

“My industrial marketing placement at Panasonic gave me the opportunity to gain real-world work experience, apply all of the theory I had learned, learn how to build relationships, work as a team, and essentially ‘test-drive’ the marketing sector. By the end of my placement, I had acquired valuable experience and key employability skills that I could demonstrate to potential employers. Edge Hill has outstanding career services to assist you with finding employment opportunities from helping you with CV writing, practise interviews, psychometric exams, and lots more. I have recently joined Princes Ltd on their Commercial Graduate Scheme where I will rotate throughout marketing, buying and sales functions. Knowing corporate connections and processes, management approaches, and economic markets, is vital in a commercial function, and Edge Hill has equipped me with a wealth of knowledge to kickstart my career. “I definitely tried to get the full Edge Hill experience. During first year, I decided that I wanted to study abroad. I was able to go to Paris and study at EDC Business School. This gave me the opportunity to get a really good basis of how much more there is to business. I was then focused on doing a sandwich placement to put what I’d learned into real life skills. I got a placement at BT in London doing partnership marketing, drawing upon modules that I had learned from the marketing module and international trade as well. I’m currently on a Civil Service Property Fast Stream with the Ministry of Justice in London. I manage around 15-20 properties, liaising and building relationships with staff and suppliers to ensure that building work and safety standards are always met. My advice would be to get involved in as much as you can – particularly placements, internships, and study abroad opportunities. “I always aspired to work in Business to Business marketing due to the fascinating evolving nature of the environment. I studied various modules relating to advertising, strategic brand management, and, public relations and reputation management. This provided me with a deep theoretical understanding of various marketing components which I now draw upon daily. I also had the opportunity to complete a placement at Preston City Council in the Communications and Marketing department. My current role as a Project Support Officer (Marketing) involves working specifically within the Employability, Enterprise, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (E3i) function at Edge Hill University. My role involves working on a highly regarded SME engagement project that supports the growth and productivity agenda throughout Lancashire and the Liverpool City Region.
