Real world experience

Edge Hill Business School

The key to all of our Accountancy, Business and Management and Marketing courses is to provide all students with the opportunity to develop and gain experience in the real world.

Put your learning into practice, develop your skills and build relationships with potential future employers on a work placement.

Throughout your degree and upon graduation, you will have gained both academic and real-life transferrable skills. You will have the knowledge, confidence, flexibility and skills to immediately become a valued and successful employee in the business world.

With employability skills embedded throughout our courses, we actively encourage our students to embrace any opportunities to gain work-related learning experience, with financial assistance often available through the EHU Student Opportunity Fund.

Personal development and employability

Throughout the three years of their degree, we support every student with their personal development and employability skills. The key theme that we encourage and emphasise students to actively work and build upon, is the need to develop transferrable skills and an evidence base of why they would be a suitable candidate for a particular role. We strongly support students to take opportunities such as summer placements and sandwich placements that will allow them to enhance their skill bases for employment. During second year, students engage in a Mock Assessment Centre Day and in work placements, client projects or running their own small business initiative. All students enter third year with these transferrable skills very well embedded and are fully equipped to begin applying for graduate level jobs, continuing to receive the full support of staff.”

Sandwich placement

My placement requires me to analyse my departments performance and look for ways that we can modernise and become more efficient, we do this by creating strategies based on data analytics ensuring decision making is based on hard facts rather than feeling. I do this by combing my intuition and knowledge learnt throughout modules in my business degree. I have developed many skills so far, many that can’t be learnt in university alone, the most important ones are: decision making, problem-solving/analytics, time-keeping/workload-management, advanced IT skills and networking.”

Liam Davies BSc (Hons) Business & Economics, Undergraduate placement in Strategy Planning and Performance

The benefit of a sandwich year – a full year in industry – is that they help you to stand out to future employees as you develop significant work related skills – you may even get offered a graduate job with the company you undertake your placement with. When you return to complete your final year, you will be able to relate elements of the modules to the ‘real life’ situations you experienced.

Graduate life

This degree provided me with entrepreneurial skills which helped me land graduate jobs for SME Advisory firms within the North West. I am currently working to become a Chartered Financial Planner. This degree teaches you how to learn and build your knowledge across all sectors of financial services. Within my current employment there is such a variety of clients. Therefore, learning how to present and communicate your information specifically to each individual is crucial. Having that broad depth of knowledge and commercial awareness certainly makes you stand out and it can be the difference of retaining the services of a client. The skills this degree offers are fundamental in any industry; the course is modern, relevant and discusses real life issues that businesses face. Due to the broad nature of the course, you naturally become adaptable. This degree gives the flexibility to work independently and gives you essential team working skills.”
