How has your English Literature degree at Edge Hill helped to prepare you for the world of work and life after you graduate?

My English Literature degree at Edge Hill University has prepared me for the world of work through the different modules that we have been allowed to choose. Through picking an elective module from creative writing called ‘The Writer’s Life’, I was able to gain a valuable insight into the publishing industry. One of my projects was to create a literary magazine, of which I am now the editor in chief. We created, advertised, received submissions and professionally printed this magazine. Also, my personal tutor and others helped me secure an internship with Knives Forks and Spoons Press (K.F.S.) in Liverpool. With the help of the Student Opportunity Fund, I was able to pay for two Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) courses in copy editing and proofreading, which were essential for my publishing internship, as that is what I want to do in the future.

You have recently received funding from the Edge Hill Student Opportunity Fund to undertake an internship. Tell us a bit about what the internship will involve and how the funding will help?

This internship is with K.F.S. Press in Liverpool, teaching me how to copy edit, proof-read and market in publishing. With the Edge Hill University Student Opportunity Fund, I’ve been able to afford books about the publishing industry and also travel to Liverpool for the launch of books that I helped produce.

The funding will also help you take two courses from the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)

My personal tutor told me about the CIEP courses for copy editing and proofreading, essential skills when looking into a career in publishing. You’re able to do them in your free time, but they do cost money, and therefore the Student Opportunity Fund helped a lot in making these accessible to me.

What is the best thing about studying at Edge Hill?

One of the best things about studying at Edge Hill is definitely that this is a relatively small University compared to others. It therefore gives each student more time to spend with tutors and other members of staff. The campus is also beautiful, and it’s amazing for going on walks. The University has beautiful buildings equipped with all the resources you need for your studies – roof top gardens, outdoor cinemas, a shop – basically anything you might need!
