Practice makes perfect Real world experience – crime house

Students on our BSc (Hons) Professional Policing programme can put their learning into context in a safe and realistic environment in our purpose-built Police Training and Simulation Facility. Affectionately known on-campus as ‘The Crime House’, the former domestic home is now part of our Ormskirk campus, has several rooms set up as home dwellings – including a kitchen and bedroom. This allows trainees to work through criminal and investigative scenarios they would discover in real home environments.

In addition to the traditional décor are some more unusual features. There is a “parade” room for students to receive their briefings and four syndicate rooms for learning and teaching activities. On the ground floor, there are some functional elements of a police station, including a custody suite and cell. Each room in the house contains technology linked to a control room allowing staff to monitor investigations and exercises, and for trainees to watch their work and share comments as a group.

Our students have recognised the value of the Crime House, as well as other on-campus facilities – in the latest National Student Survey, over 98% of Professional Policing students said they were satisfied with the learning resources on their course*. With opportunities to work alongside law and criminology students, as an Edge Hill student, you can experience collaboration and learn about new subjects that will help you be the best police officer you can be.
