It’s double celebrations for an Edge Hill University graduate who has secured a competitive traineeship at the popular Wordsworth Museum in Grasmere, Lake District and awarded a First Class Honours.

Rachel Brodie, from Cadishead in Greater Manchester, studied BA (Hons) Primary English Education with QTS and is using her degree to pursue her passion for history and heritage.

Rachel said: “My original plan was to become a primary school teacher as I have always enjoyed working with children and young people. However, during my final year I started to consider the possibility of working within the museum and heritage sector as my particular interest lies in History.”

Rachel’s traineeship will enable her to learn how the popular heritage site is run as well as delivering educational workshops all about the Wordsworth’s lives, words and their influence on the Romantic movement.

“Talking about the traineeship Rachel said: “It’s been brilliant so far. I’ll be getting a lot of practical experience of working in the museum, providing tours of Dove Cottage and working on the front desk as well as helping with the huge range of educational programmes they run.

“As an Education Trainee I’ll also be working with the education team to create and deliver programmes and workshops, alongside learning how to care for the museum’s collection and the historical house that is Dove Cottage. Working with lots of different age groups will be a new experience for me.”

Rachel’s passion for history, heritage and museums started from a young age when her parents would often take her to cultural sites as a child.

Rachel said: “I have always been passionate about historical stories and artefacts, stemming from regular visits to museums, art galleries and heritage sites from a young age. These visits enabled active learning in context-rich environments that felt personal and authentic. I feel lucky to have found a workplace like Wordsworth Grasmere where both of these are core values of the organisation.”

Rachel credits her both her friends and her tutors for helping her succeed and get a First Class Honours degree.

“It’s an honour to be graduating, it’s such a huge accomplishment and is definitely my proudest moment to date. I’d like to thank all my tutors, especially Jane Calcutt put in so much effort to support us with our assignments and organised trips to Speke Hall. She really demonstrated now to make learning fun and engaging.”

After living in halls in her first year Rachel made lots of friends, she said:

“I lived in halls, and it was amazing. Everyone on the course was lovely too and I also made loads of friends at Edge Hill Sport gym classes I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”
