Edge Hill University’s Computer Science department is responding to the UK’s digital skills gap by helping to fast-track learners into careers in data.

The University has been working with the Institute of Coding (IoC) as part of a collaborative national consortium of industry, educators, and outreach providers to close the UK’s digital skills gap through employer-led education.

A 16-week online Skills Bootcamp in Cloud Computing and Data Science was devised with Edge Hill’s Computer Science team. The programme was funded by the Department for Education and is part of the UK Government’s Skills for Life campaign.

It is designed to support learners to gain new employment, upskill or change career into digital roles.

Professor of Computing, Ella Pereira, said: “It has been amazing to have the opportunity to devise and deliver a course with a real impact and to see our Skills Bootcamp graduates succeeding in their digital careers.”

The Skills Bootcamp in Cloud Computing and Data Analytics incorporates an employability support service that seeks to work with learners from a diverse cohort to support them into jobs in the data industry. Online learners from different parts the country have been successful in securing employment through the programme.

Ms Ajay said: “I was able to find a perfect balance between childcare and my learning routine. The flexibility of Skills Bootcamp and their on-going employability support helped me gain my dream job in the data industry.”

Imran Khan said: “The Skills Bootcamp in Cloud Computing and Data Analytics programme enabled me to take the next step in progressing my career, providing me with the inspiration and motivation to apply for data roles that had previously been out of my reach.

“The knowledge gained on the programme has served me well in familiarising myself with the new data processes and systems associated with my career change employment. Since completing the Bootcamp, I have joined a financial organisation as a data continuous improvement analyst, which I’m thoroughly enjoying.”
