Computing and IT
In the Department of Computer Science, one of our top priorities is to equip students with skills and knowledge to succeed in their future career. All of our degree programmes are informed by representatives in industry and professional bodies – ensuring your skills are as up to date as possible.
We actively encourage all of our students to get involved with as many extracurricular activities as they can. This enables our students to grow as individuals, and provides them with invaluable experiences and discussion points to help them stand-out in when they take the first steps of their career journey.
Each year, the Department organises a subject specific Careers Fair, inviting over 20 employers from a range of technology and IT companies. The event is open to all year groups, and is a fantastic opportunity for you to build your network and find out about the career options available to you, as well as potentially bag yourself a work placement or summer internship. And for final year students, this is a chance to introduce yourself to employers and find out about their graduate schemes and job vacancies – and get some tips on how to ace the application process. Companies who have attended previous careers fairs include AO, QVC, General Electric, Bentley and Pilkington NSG.
As well as our annual Careers Fair, we also like to take the opportunity at the end of each academic year to celebrate the success of our students and highlight the fantastic work they have done. Our End of Year Showcase brings students, staff and employers together in the Tech Hub. Over the course of the day, our students are invited to present their project work, and showcase their achievements using state-of-the-art facilities to solve extra-curricular challenges. Employers always have high praise for our students and their achievements, and their attendance at the showcase gives another opportunity for students to build their network and chat with people from high-profile companies during the round-table discussions.
If that’s not enough exposure to employers, work experience opportunities and extra-curricular activity – we also have a dedicated team of employability and placement staff who have built a strong network of work placement opportunities across the North West and beyond. Whether you want to take up an industrial sandwich placement, a summer or Easter placement, a part-time internship or voluntary work experience; our team are on-hand to help you reach out to employers you are interested in and build your experience from the first year of your studies. Our students have secured placements with Google, Microsoft, Barclays, BBC, Network Rail and Nova, to name a few.
In addition to all that goes on within the Department to help build your confidence and experience, as an Edge Hill student you will also have access to our central careers team. From the moment you start your degree, you have access to a highly dedicated and passionate team who can provide friendly, impartial and confidential guidance – whether you want a part-time job to earn some extra cash, or get involved with volunteering to make friends in the local community. You can rest assured that you will never be short of opportunities to build that all-important work experience.
