My name is Max and I’m in my second year student studying Bsc (Hons) Marketing with Advertising at Edge Hill University.
If you want to have a taster of what being an Edge Hill University student is like, then an open day is for you. You will be able to spend the day exploring the beautiful 160-acre campus, finding out more about the course you want to study and visiting some of the stunning buildings such as Catalyst, the Hub and the Sports Centre.
Before you attend an open day make sure you research the University sufficiently so you have an understanding of what courses we provide. Learn more about studying with Edge Hill and request a prospectus today.
Make sure you book your place at an open day in advance. Booking in advance means that you’ll receive a programme for the day in the post so that you can plan out your day before you even get here. You can then head to registration on the day, and staff can answer any questions you might have about how the day works.
On the day, I would advise going on a campus tour with one of our student guides. They will show you round the campus efficiently, so you don’t get lost – looping you around the campus so you end up back where you started. Student guides can also answer any questions you may have such as about the nightlife, living on campus and what it is like to be a student here.
Subject talks
A crucial part of an open day is going to a session about the course you want to study. Each course has a presentation delivered by a lecturer which will give you an overview of the course, what you’ll be taught and what career options are available, you can also ask them any questions you might have. These presentations usually take place in the building your course is based in, so it’s a great way to get a feel for what studying here would be like.
Places to visit
The Hub – at the heart of campus, this is a hot spot for students and staff. With everything under one roof – visit the McColl’s inside the building, grab a coffee from The Hub, or explore the hot food and drink options at Sages restaurant. On our open days, this is where you will go for registration and where we have our student experience fair – information desks for things like careers and finance. It is also where you can get complimentary food and drinks on an open day.
The Catalyst – definitely one of the most impressive buildings on campus – the library. It’s around 8,000 square meters, three floors, lots of computers and workstations, over 230,000 books, several group meeting rooms and is open 24 hours a day. It even has a café inside where you can wake yourself up with a coffee. On an open day these teams are available in the Hub to answer any questions you have on topics such as accommodation and student finance.
The Sports Centre – our very own gym with two large indoor sports halls and a swimming pool. The gym has cardiovascular and weight lifting machines along with a dumbbell rack and a boxing punch bag. There is also another Starbucks inside The Sports Centre.
Halls of residence – one of the most important things for anyone that plans to live on campus is to visit the various halls of residence that the University provides. There are around 2,300 rooms on offer and depending on the halls you pick, some rooms have a television, a desk, a single bed, a wardrobe, a mini fridge and an en-suite bathroom. At an open day, you can choose which accommodation you would like to look at by using the map included in the programme and going on a self-guided tour.
My experience of an open day
As soon as I arrived at Edge Hill there was somebody to greet me and show me where to go to for registration. A staff member explained what the day would consist of and gave me a programme which also contained a map. I then met up with a very friendly and helpful student guide who gave me a campus tour. They also answered all of my questions and told me lots of interesting facts about Edge Hill.
I spoke to a few current students about how they were finding their time at Edge Hill and I also spoke to some students that were doing the course I was applying for which was very helpful for me as they answered all the questions I had regarding the course. Make sure you ask any questions you may have – the students and staff are more than happy to answer them.
