The appointment reflects Professor Moriarty’s strong reputation for leadership in student experience, learning innovation and educational enhancement.
In her current role at the University of Lincoln, Professor Moriarty has made a significant impact. Her achievements include leading a major enhancement project that reconfigured academic governance structures, designing and delivering a student retention initiative which created a notable increase in progression, and embedding a robust, data-driven approach to programme monitoring and scrutiny.
Throughout her career, Professor Moriarty has consistently placed students at the heart of academic strategy and is widely recognised for her collaborative, principled, and inclusive leadership.
On her appointment, Professor Abigail Moriarty said: “It’s a privilege to join such an outstanding community of dedicated staff, inspiring students and genuinely wonderful people.

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students), Professor Moriarty will provide strategic academic leadership across the University, including curriculum design, digital education development, work-integrated learning and academic staff development.
She will also lead the expansion of new income-generating opportunities through apprenticeships, professional development, and high-quality educational partnerships.
Professor Moriarty will align academic strategy with regional skills priorities and international demand, strengthening Edge Hill’s civic contribution while harnessing emerging global education opportunities.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Young, said: “I am absolutely delighted to welcome Professor Abigail Moriarty as our new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students). Abigail will bring vision, energy and a wealth of experience to this pivotal appointment for the University.
“Abigail will champion innovation in learning, teaching and assessment, including the use of digital technologies and AI, so that our students benefit from engaging, future-focused educational experiences. She will lead an ambitious programme of portfolio review and development and drive improvements in student outcomes.

Professor Moriarty will officially join Edge Hill University in April 2026, coinciding with the launch of the institution’s new University Strategic Plan, Our Connected Futures 2026–31.
