A health care assistant starting at Edge Hill University in September has had her efforts to help people during the pandemic recognised with an excellence Scholarship.

Charlotte Abraham, from Wigan, spent much of the Covid-19 pandemic working on various hospital wards as a health care assistant, doing whatever she could to help people with Covid-19 and their families deal with the illness.

Charlotte said: “Working on the wards was sometimes really difficult but also very rewarding. One of my main jobs was making sure that families could stay in touch with their loved ones by helping them to make phone calls and do video chats. It was such an important thing to do as seeing their families really helped with their recovery and for very sick people it was sometimes the last time they saw their families.”

In recognition of her incredible efforts, and before she’s even started her BSc (Hons) Paediatric Nursing course, Edge Hill has awarded Charlotte with an Excellence Scholarship. The scholarship provides financial support to help with her degree.

“I was overwhelmed to get the scholarship,” said Charlotte. “I’ve worked so hard to get my grades up and working during the pandemic was sometimes really tough. For all my efforts to be recognised like this felt amazing and will really help with my university studies.”

Charlotte was inspired to become a nurse by her grandmother’s own nursing career. She also wanted to work with children after being a committed Girl Guide for over 11 years, even receiving their highest accolade, the Baden Powell Award, for her dedication, strong leadership and commitment to the Girl Guide ethos.

“I’ve wanted to be a nurse for a while, from my experience as a health care assistant I know it will be a very rewarding job and that I will get a lot out of it. I’ve also always loved working with children, I get a lot of joy from it and so the children’s nursing course seemed like the perfect fit. One day I hope to be working at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

“I can’t wait to start my course in September. Lots of my friends and family who’ve been there recommended it because of the incredible teaching and the support they received.”
