An Edge Hill University academic has won an award for his outstanding leadership and commitment to widening participation in medicine.

Dr Peter Leadbetter has scooped the New Leaders Award run by the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME), who work collaboratively with educators, learners, researchers and policy makers to promote excellence in medical education to meet the changing needs of the future healthcare workforce.

This annual prize recognises outstanding leadership in the field of medical education for those early in their medical education career and whose work has impacted on improving the quality of learning, teaching or the patient experience. 

Peter said: “Personally, I am over the moon to receive this award in an area I am so passionate about. It is heart-warming to receive external validation from such a high profile and supportive organisation such as ASME. We have a long way to go to widening access and participation in Medicine, however with the support of colleagues, networks, ASME and the Medical School at Edge Hill University we are moving in the right direction.”

It was Peter’s work on leading the Foundation Year for Medicine’s widening participation initiative that secured him the accolade.

Edge Hill University has a long-standing commitment to widening access to higher education and the theme of opportunity for all is a key component of the institution’s vision.

The Foundation Year for Medicine is aimed at students from the North West who have the potential and aspiration to become doctors but who are facing additional barriers which may impact on their ability to meet the academic requirements for direct entry. Applicants must satisfy certain widening participation criteria to be eligible to apply.

The University’s Medical School has been training much-needed additional doctors for the North West since 2020 who understand the needs of the local communities and can respond to, and drive forward, new models of care.
