Nicola Cobham

A former Edge Hill student is capturing the imagination of children through her love for storytelling.

English Literature alumna Nicola Cobham, who lives in Hightown near Crosby, has channelled her inner author to create stories which excite young minds across TV and books.

After graduating in 2005, Nicola juggled jobs and perfecting her storytelling skills before getting her big break writing sketches for much loved children’s programmes like Something Special, Gigglebiz and Gigglequiz in 2011.

After a year sharing stories for the entertainment of youngsters across the country, Nicola branched out into other areas of writing – including poetry for the London 2012 Olympics – before returning to focus on creating stories for children and exploring writing in other forms.

Nicola has now become one of 14 authors chosen for the Penguin Random House editorial scheme and is working on a children’s book, Sycamore Winter, with the help of her editor.

Nicola said: “I am thoroughly enjoying writing the manuscript for Sycamore Winter as I feel passionately about giving underrepresented working class voices a space on the bookshelves so the next generation can read about themselves.

“Working part time is giving me the space to develop the narrative, and it’s great to have the support of my editor who helps to keep me on track – I am excited to see what opportunities the final draft brings.”

The novel, which is aimed at young people, deals with issues of class, privilege and the big transition from primary to secondary school. If her manuscript is selected it may be published or Nicola will be given her own agent to support her in her literary journey.

When asked about her time at Edge Hill, Nicola said; “Whilst studying writing and writing professionally are very different things, my English Literature course equipped me with the critical ability and skills needed to review my work as both a reader and writer.

“The course itself is absolutely second to none, and it only strengthened my passion for writing and creating stories.”
