A new mental health initiative set up by Edge Hill law students has been launched with a new student-to-student support scheme to help those who may be struggling during the pandemic.

Edge Hill’s Law Students’ Society has initiated The Outreach Project to help law students studying at the University who may be feeling lonely or isolated as a result of Covid-19 restrictions.

The Outreach Project aims to foster a supportive framework and base for students to seek advice and build relationships, make friends and help build confidence.

The initiative was launched on World Kindness Day by a team of law students, including second-year student Demi Thomas.

Demi, who is originally from Shrewsbury in Shropshire, said: “Recent feedback from students has shown that, in these times of online learning and lockdown, students are feeling lonely and isolated.

“We launched The Outreach Project to create a safe space where students can make friends, speak freely about their emotions and help each other to get through these difficult times. Now more than ever, it is important to reach out to those in need, so we can all get through this together.”

The project will include a mixture of online and face-to-face events to help connect students to their peers during lockdown.

Simon Hale-Ross, Senior Lecturer in Law, said: “In response to recent personal tutor sessions and hearing how some students are feeling lonely during these difficult times, it was wonderful to see the Law Students’ Society launch The Outreach Project to help support others on their programme.

“It was felt that such a project would be better created by students, for students. Moving forward into the remainder of this semester and next, it is hoped that the project will foster a supportive framework and base for students, and of course a great learning community.”

Edge Hill University’s Law Students’ Society (EHULSS) is a student-led organisation created for and by Law students. The society has a strong presence in the Department of Law and Criminology to help new and existing students to enjoy the full experience of University life. Find out more about EHULSS here.
