A former student turned assistant television director has returned to his university roots to film Edge Hill as the backdrop for his latest TV project.
Rick O’Connor graduated from Edge Hill with a degree in Media and Communication in 2003. Seventeen years later, he is back on campus to film the new series of CBBC sitcom So Awkward.
Having worked with Hollywood A-listers and popstars, Rick has shared his experiences of working in the TV industry, and how the skills he gained at Edge Hill have been key to his success.
He said: “The biggest skills I learned at Edge Hill, which have really helped my career, are the importance of preparation and the need to fully commit yourself to any project.
“Currently I’m working in a new role as a Covid Supervisor, but more often than not I work as an Assistant Director. Being a successful AD is about communication, it involves managing the shoot and making sure all the departments know what they are doing in order to work efficiently.
“I’ve worked with Premier League footballers, popstars, comedians and massive Hollywood stars, and I’m proud of everything I’ve worked on. I’m also really fortunate to have done three series of So Awkward. The cast and crew are just the most wonderful bunch to work with.”
Reflecting on his time at Edge Hill and the advice he would offer to other students, Rick said:
“I loved my time at Edge Hill and everything it taught me. I met some amazing people and 20 years later I’m still lucky enough to call them friends. When I came back to film last week and seeing how the campus has changed, I’m even prouder to tell people that I went to Edge Hill.
“For anyone wanting to go into TV, I would encourage them to get as much experience on professional projects as possible, as soon as they can. I love what I do and get a tremendous amount of joy from doing it, so I would certainly recommend it as a career.”
