Edge Hill University has been ranked in the top five percent of university language centres in the UK by EL Gazette.
The Language Centre has been recognised as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ based on its successful British Council inspection report and has also been ranked in the top three state sector adult centres in the UK.
Edge Hill scored strengths in 12 of 14 areas which included teaching, course design, staff management, student administration and care of students.
EL Gazette is a key English language teaching industry publication, and this recognition will enable Edge Hill to continue to attract international students and partners looking for high-quality English language courses.
Carmel Roche, Director of the Language Centre, said: “This is a significant achievement for the Language Centre to be named in the top five per cent of all Centres of Excellence in the country. This recognition will provide quality assurance to international partners and prospective students alike, as we continue to strengthen and expand our programme offering.”
Edge Hill’s Language Centre provides English language courses to international students prior to embarking on their academic courses, as well as a range of other languages which can be taken as part of an undergraduate degree or as an extracurricular evening class.
For the first time in 2019, the centre launched a Master’s programme in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
The programme, which is available as one year full-time or part-time over two years, is designed to develop existing professional skills and it is suitable for home, EU and international participants who have classroom experience of teaching English as a second language.
Lisa Moret was a student on the first cohort for the MA TESOL. She said: “The MA TESOL has been life changing for me and is one of the best decisions I have made, both professionally and personally. Carmel, Mark and James were all fantastic tutors who supported us well throughout the course and we learned so much from their varied teaching backgrounds. For me, each of them has been inspiring in their own way.”
The Language Centre at Edge Hill is accredited by the British Council and BALEAP (The Global Forum for EAP Professionals) for teaching English in the UK, giving an assurance of quality to international students who are taking or are planning to take an English language course or the pre-sessional course before progressing to their academic studies.
