A retail expert at Edge Hill University has given her take on how the high street is coping with Covid-19 in the Grimsey Review and calls for drastic new measures to save the sector.

Kim Cassidy, Professor of Services Marketing, has contributed to The Grimsey Review Covid-19 Supplement, which has been put together by Bill Grimsey, the former the CEO of huge brands such as Wickes and Iceland, with contributions from a range of highly respected experts.

The review aims to influence policymakers in an age where the traditional high street is facing extinction and suggests radical changes that might just save it.

Professor Cassidy, alongside fellow industry experts, has given a fascinating analysis of the retail sector and takes a hard look at the huge impacts of Covid-19 on the high street.

She said:

“There’s never been a more important time to understand the strains and pressures that our high streets are under. High streets all over the country were already facing difficulties and Covid-19 has only made this worse.

“We’ve already seen huge brands winding up and others shutting hundreds of stores. I’m really glad I had the opportunity to contribute to the review and demonstrate how these problems can be dealt with via drastic changes to how our high streets operate.”

Professor Cassidy will be exploring the findings of the Grimsey Review alongside Bill Grimsey at the Richmond Retail & Ecommerce Directors’ Forum; an entirely virtual conference being held from 14th to 16th July. The event is in its 12th year and will play host to 180 senior retailers and 75 retail service providers.

On Wednesday 15th July the pair will give a talk on Re-imagining retail as part of the ‘community hub’. They will explain that Covid-19 could be an opportunity for town centres to change and thrive if they are willing to adopt a new model focused less on shops and more on community.
