Laura De’Ath

A leading Naval Nurse who served in Iraq before becoming a mum-of-three has achieved her dream of becoming a teacher.

Laura De’Ath, (37) who spent ten years in the Royal Navy as a nurse before settling in St Helens and starting a family, has (today) achieved a First Class Honours degree in Primary Education with QTS from Edge Hill University.

After juggling the demands of university life with three young children, Laura will start her dream job at her children’s school in Billinge in September.

Laura said: “When I was younger I joined the Navy Reserves and then started my career in the Navy. They put me through university and I became a qualified nurse like my mum.

“I loved my time in the Navy and the friendships I developed living and working so closely with colleagues.

“I spent one period of active service in Iraq which was obviously scary as we were attacked but I was pleased that I was able to help and use my nursing skills to help people.

“Deciding to have a family was the career change for me. I decided having my boys was more important so I left the Navy and became a full-time mum.

“It was quite a change going from Navy training to parenthood and after having three children I started to think about returning to work.

“I considered going back into nursing, but I’ve always had a desire to become a teacher. I taught a girls’ football team in the past  and loved it and I thought it was now or never to do what I really wanted to do.”

She added: “When I came to look around Edge Hill I knew straight away that I wanted to study here, it’s such a gorgeous campus and has a really friendly and homely nature.

“The teaching and support from tutors has been fantastic and I’ve had some great teaching placements.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw a job advertised at the school my children attend, it was the first job I applied for and I got it. Then to receive a First is just amazing.”
