Staff and students at Edge Hill University were invited to a special screening of an episode of BBC One’s Moving On, which was filmed on campus last year.
LA Production’s contemporary drama Moving On is now on its tenth series, and a group of Edge Hill’s Media students gained vital skills and experience when they assisted with the filming on campus.
Moving On focuses on how to ‘move on’ and pass turning points in life, and the episode By Any Other Name was filmed at Edge Hill and features Carl, a cleaner at a university who masquerades as a lecturer and discovers a newfound confidence.
Eight students spent three days with the production crew, where they dressed the set, shadowed the Assistant Director and the crew, and acted as runners, gaining valuable on-set experience, and advice and guidance from the crew about how to enter the world of TV production.
Alex Sheppard, who graduated from Edge Hill in 2018 with a degree in Film and TV Production, assisted with the filming.
“On Moving On I largely shadowed members of the crew, but also assisted in moving props and kit around the campus and stood in as an extra in some scenes,” said Alex.
“These sort of opportunities are great as you are able to gain contacts in the industry and build a network. You are also able to see how professional productions are made, which is very useful at interviews and looks great on a CV, and you can also apply this to your own work.”
Alex took inspiration from this and now works as a camera operator for ITV Central News, working closely with reporters, producers and news editors. He shoots footage and interviews to create news packages and to bring stories to life, covering a range of news bulletins throughout the day.
Colin McKeown MBE, Executive Producer and founder LA Productions and The Liverpool Film Academy, and honorary doctor at Edge Hill University, said:
“It’s incredibly important for production companies like LA Productions to nurture and support new talent both in front of, and behind, the camera. This is why we’re committed to working with establishments like Edge Hill University, using our practical industry knowledge to give on-the-job experience to students, and also to offer creative inspiration to would-be writers, directors, editors and producers. The students of today are the filmmakers of tomorrow, so anything we can do to ignite imaginations, inspire ambitions and offer an all-important first step onto the ladder of success, we’re committed to doing.
“It is not often you can portray an establishment from inside out and we are delighted to have been able to do this with the episode of Moving On shot at Edge Hill University.”
“(I’m) delighted to continue working together,” added Jimmy McGovern, the Program Creator.
By Any Other Name was shown on BBC One on Monday 4th February. If you missed it, you can watch the episode here.
