An innovative £26m building at the heart of Edge Hill University’s campus, due for completion in June 2018, will be named Catalyst – the video above shows a birds eye view of the building.
Catalyst will house the University’s Library, Careers and Student Services functions in its contemporary 8,000 square metre space.
It will be an inspiring 24/7 destination for the Edge Hill community with welcoming, knowledgeable staff on hand to support student life, research, learning and career development.
This ‘destination’ building will provide a 50 percent increase in study spaces, with 30 bookable rooms plus two training rooms. 24-hour opening will give students improved access to services.
Around 230,000 books will sit on 5,000 shelves and the building’s top floor will be a dedicated space for study, silent working and research, with a traditional reading-room feel.
Designed to centralise all services, visitors will be able to access support face-to-face and virtually and make use of automated and self-service options.
Confidential interview spaces, meeting areas, group rooms and waiting areas have all been designed to ensure users will receive the best possible service and experience.
An events space and new facilities will allow the Careers Service to showcase job opportunities and host employer events alongside mock interviews, CV workshops and ongoing career advice and support.
Catalyst will also have a landscaped roof terrace taking in views across the 160-acre campus and beyond.
The ground floor will feature a coffee shop and an exhibition space which will host events and double as a relaxation area.
A dedicated space will also offer workstations equipped with specialist software currently only accessible within individual faculty buildings.
The building will feature interactive, touch-screen technology and many of its services will be bookable online.
Dr John Cater, Vice-Chancellor at Edge Hill University said:
“Catalyst aims to provide the Edge Hill community with a convenient 24/7 destination and a new focal point on campus. Creating the opportunity for Learning Services, Careers and Student Services to work in tandem, Catalyst will build on existing good practice of delivering excellent customer-focussed services, providing an even better experience for our University community.”
