Alongside his studying, Wesley Griffiths has made the most of the extracurricular activities offered at Edge Hill and has already managed to secure a job. This makes him the ideal person to provide advice to current students.

22 year old Wesley from Warrington has graduated from Edge Hill University today with a Masters in Business Administration specialising in HR.

While completing his Business and Management degree, Wesley’s interest in HR was piqued after working in a school that was converting to an academy. He decided to base his first HR research project on the school’s psychological contract, which then provided the grounds for a further research topic to critically analyse the school’s HR framework.

During his time at Edge Hill, Wesley was given the opportunity to attend the International Festival for Business which brings together thousands of businesses from around the world for events and networking.

“Attending the International Festival for Business was a great opportunity as I was provided with an insight into the future of business and what to expect over the coming year. I heard inspirational talks from business leaders, a business psychologist, and I even got to meet entrepreneur Johnny Cupcakes who founded a clothing line using cupcakes as the prominent design, and had 16 different businesses before he was 16 years old.”

Wesley’s current job role working for Marks & Spencer in their HR Shared Services department in Manchester allows him to put everything he learnt during his Masters into practice. He’s also in the process of applying for a sought-after place on their graduate scheme and he has some advice for current students who also hope to secure employment before graduating.

“Listen to your tutors – when John Cater stands in the welcome lecture explaining how fast university passes, he is not kidding. Ensure you throw yourself in to your studies, planning your time effectively to make sure to do more than just your university work as employers want candidates that demonstrate skills for the workplace. Be mindful to not overdo it but above all, remember why you are there and what you want to get out of it at the end.”
