Edge Hill University in partnership with Everton in the Community proudly introduced the Pat Van Den Hauwe Walking Football League during half-time of Tuesday’s match, with players from the programme making their debut on the hallowed turf of Goodison Park.
Led by former Blues left-back Van Den Hauwe, the men took part in a coaching session in front of the Everton faithful to promote the walking football group, part of the Active Blues programme run in partnership with Edge Hill Univeristy.
Professor Andy Smith from the University’s Department of Sport and Physical Activity said the walking football initiative is a great chance for men to get active, meet new people and brush up on their skills.
“We are delighted that our longstanding partnership with Everton in the Community through the Active Blues project continues to encourage men to become more active, and improve their physical and mental health.
“The Pat van Den Hauwe Walking Football League is the latest development in our Active Blues collaboration which is led by Edge Hill PhD student, Tom Duffell and the Everton coaches. We hope through these initiatives we can continue to generate new learnings that will enable us to better understand how we can improve men’s health and wellbeing, whilst reducing the social and economic costs of physical inactivity to society,” Andy said.
The Pat Van Den Hauwe Walking Football Leagues funded by Sport England and is designed specifically for men aged 35-50. It is ideal for those who want to keep fit, have fun, learn new skills and socialise at the same time.
The monthly league will be fronted by the former Blues defender who will be on hand to offer players his football tips and advice on how to be crowned champions.
The ‘Pat Van Den Hauwe Walking Football League’ is free to enter and will be housed at the Powerleague on Whittle Street, Everton. It will be running on the last Sunday of every month and there will be the opportunity for players to win prizes including trophies, matchday tickets and stadium tour tickets.
