A mother of five who thought she’d missed the chance to chase her dream of working with families affected by mental health issues is on track to achieve her goal after completing Edge Hill University’s Fastrack course.
Thirty-nine year old Julieann Heskin from Maghull joined the Fastrack course to update her qualifications and progress her career in the NHS.
“I have worked for the NHS for several years and couldn’t progress my career without updating my qualifications. I am a single parent of 5 children, my eldest is off to Edge hill herself in September and my youngest is 6 so it felt like the right time for me to take some time for myself and do something I have desperately wanted to do for many years.
“I have loved every minute of the course. The students were from varied backgrounds and all brought something different to the course. I’ve formed good friendships that will hopefully continue as I study towards my degree,” Julieann said.
Julieann said she hopes the course will lead to her achieving her dream of working in mental health care.
“My dream is to work with families who are effected by mental health. I believe that mental health is a family issue and that when an illness becomes apparent, it is important that the whole family get the correct support and information to enable the patient to manage or recover from their illness,” she said.
Julieann said her advice to anyone considering the course would be to put their doubts aside and go for it.
“Any doubts or fears you have about returning to study or thinking that you won’t be able to do it because you struggled in school, or haven’t studied for so long fade pretty quickly.
“You learn so much in such a short time and while it is all consuming, you won’t do much other than study and sleep during the course, the sense of achievement when handing in your work on file submission day is amazing,” Julieann said.
Fastrack is an intensive, free programme for adults. It has been designed to provide the skills and knowledge to prepare participants for an Edge Hill degree.
