Edge Hill University Library has received the Social Media Award in the Marketing Excellence Awards 2016, for a week long social media campaign celebrating the works of William Shakespeare.

The annual Marketing Excellence Awards were established by the Publicity and Public Relations Group (PPRG), which is a special interest group of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). The awards recognise and celebrate successful marketing and promotional campaigns from libraries of all sizes and sectors across the country.

Edge Hill Library devised #WhereforeArtThouWilliam, which was a week-long social media campaign and competition to celebrate the life and works of William Shakespeare and promote reading for pleasure with World Book Night, as well as showcasing the University’s beautiful campus and the Library’s online social media presence.

The competition comprised of posting a daily photograph on social media of an obscure location on campus, featuring a William Shakespeare/Where’s Wally character and props depicting one of his plays. People were then invited to guess the place and the play, and all correct answers were entered into a prize draw.

“The reason we chose to communicate this project digitally was to interact with students and staff in a format we knew they were already heavily using – social media,” said Julie Nolan, Edge Hill’s Learning Spaces Manager, “and through the online interactions we were able to showcase our beautiful campus and promote the works of William Shakespeare in a fun and inclusive style, all on an £18 budget.

“We also wanted to promote reading for pleasure as a form of stress relief and by giving away free fiction, and promoting Shakespeare both digitally and via a physical stock display, we felt this would encourage students to read outside of their coursework. We were fortunate to receive a selection of books from World Book Night and offered these out to students visiting the library in reward for taking a #SelfieWithShakespeare.”

The Marketing Excellence Awards will be presented at the PPRG annual conference Library Marketing and PR: Critical to Success on Friday 18 November in Birmingham.
