Students and academics had a chance to see and ‘meet’ a cutting edge robot capable of many functions at Edge Hill’s Creative Edge building when Active8 Robots, in collaboration with the University’s Department of Computing and the Centre for Data Analysis and Representation hosted a demonstration of the Baxter Research robot on 3 December.

Rethink Robotics describe themselves as “redefining how manufacturing and production facilities can utilize automation. Our robots work side by side with skilled labour, are trained interactively, and provide a rapid return on investment for companies of all sizes. It’s the future of manufacturing – and it’s up and running today”.

Those attending the presentation learned how the robot can recognise different faces, pick up objects with the help of cameras on its arms, share work tasks with humans and much more.
