A talented Edge Hill University student is showing she has the X-Factor by reaching the North England Area Final of a national competition.

Kelsey May Cullen, a third year Dance and Drama student from Liverpool, is competing in the Open Mic competition, which aims to find the best singers and songwriters in the UK. She recently won the Liverpool heat of the competition and will now bid for a place in the National Final in London.

The twenty-one-year-old is delighted at the progress she has made. She said: “I’m really excited to have made it through to the North England Area Final. I was just happy to be in the regional final, so to have won it and go further in the competition is fantastic. If I could make the Grand Final in London it would be amazing.”

“I didn’t have the confidence before to go up on stage and sing to an audience, but I thought I should just get on with it. I have practised really hard for this, so I’m happy that all the effort has been worth it.”

Alongside taking part in the competition, Kelsey May has also been busy with her role as President of the Edge Hill Musical Theatre Society, which she set up this summer. She wants to give students like herself who are interested in singing, the opportunity to showcase their abilities.

Explaining why she decided to create the society, she said: “I didn’t feel there was anything on offer at Edge Hill outside of study programmes for those like myself who love to sing and I was determined to change that. I have been really pleased at the response it has received so far and we are planning to produce a musical in the spring.”

They recently performed at the Freshers’ Fair during Freshers’ Week and will be performing again in the new Arts Centre at Christmas to raise money to fund the musical. For more information, email edgehillmusicaltheatresociety@hotmail.com
