Get active at Sporting Edge during Inclusive Fitness Week – an incentive that aims to get more disabled people taking part in sport.
Back for the third year running, the national initiative which is running between Monday 3rd May and Sunday 9th May, aims to raise the awareness of inclusive fitness provision and gives the local community the chance to try new activities and sports in a safe and inclusive environment.
To help celebrate Inclusive Fitness Week, Edge Hill University is hosting a number of free taster sessions to encourage people with disabilities to get active.
There are two free events:
- Wheels for All Taster Day, Wednesday 5th May, from 12noon until 5pm, where a range of bicycles, quads, tricycles, hand cycles, tandems, chair linked cycles and more will be available at the running track for people of all ages, disabilities and differing needs to try out.
- 12-hour Arm Cycle Marathon, Friday 7th May, between 8am and 8pm in the fitness suite. An inclusive team of staff and members from Sporting Edge will be powering a Sci-Fit Pro II Arm Cycle for 12 hours with a target of reaching 120km. They will also be offering health and fitness checks and sports massage sessions during the day in return for donations. All proceeds will go to the West Lancs Disability Sports Forum.
Fitness Manager Rob Stewart said: “We already do a lot of work to ensure that people with disabilities have access to a range of inclusive fitness provisions at Sporting Edge. The special events we are running to celebrate Inclusive Fitness Week are a great way for people to see what we have on offer here in West Lancashire. Many of our staff have specialist additional disability training to ensure that you have a safe and effective workout whatever your age or disability.”
Sporting Edge has achieved the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) accreditation, which is an industry standard awarded to fitness facilities that are inclusive of both disabled and non-disabled people alike.
