EDGE HILL POET TO PERFORM AT SUDLEY HOUSE
Robert Sheppard, Writing Co ordinator at Edge Hill and author of a range of published poetry is set to perform an alternative guide to the art collection at Sudley House, Liverpool, on Saturday 6th November and Friday 12th November, with tours at 2 and 3pm.
Sheppard will lead visitors through the collection whilst performing his work, Sudley House is a Text? written on site, as a Visiting Writer to the art gallery.
Sudley House is one of the few Victorian homes that still has many of its original features intact. It is also the only surviving Victorian merchant art collection in Britain, still hanging in its original location.
Sheppard?s performance piece is evocative of the art works and the world of Liverpool trade that engendered the house and its collection, as well as the philanthropy that derived from the Unitarian faith of the Holt family, who moved to Sudley House in 1884.
George Holt began collecting paintings in the late 1860s, specialising in contemporary British art. Following his move to Sudley House he became much more familiar with the fashions of collecting, and dedicated more time and care to his purchases. Millais’ Vanessa was acquired in 1885 and in the years that followed portraits by Gainsborough, Romney, the Pre-Raphaelites and two superb late paintings by Turner were added to the collection.
Robert Sheppard is anticipating adding his unique perspective: “I’m looking forward to what is essentially a live art event crossed with a guided tour. During rehearsal it was an honour to speak before these beautiful paintings by Turner and others and I am looking forward to sharing the journey with visitors!’
Sudley today also displays other works from the Walker collection, including magnificent furniture by George Bullock.
Bookings are not required for the performance and admission is free.
