New law degree at Edge Hill

Edge Hill College of Higher Education has received official recognition from the Law Society for the approval of its LLB (Hons) Law degree as a Qualifying Law Degree.

Accredited by Lancaster University, which already enjoys an established reputation as a provider of legal education, the LLB (Hons) degree offers increased opportunities for professional legal qualifications in the north-west region.

The undergraduate programme was launched in September 2003, at Edge Hill’s Ormskirk Campus, and is a significant addition to a portfolio of undergraduate law courses, that includes degrees in Business with Law and Critical Criminology with Law.

Franco Rizzuto, Programme Leader for Law at Edge Hill said:

“This new law degree will provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to enter the legal profession, as well as many other careers. The relationship between UK, European and international law is a key feature of the programme, as legal practice increasingly crosses national boundaries.”

Graduates who achieve at least a second class honours degree and pass core modules as stipulated by the Law Society, as well as undertaking legal research, will be able to proceed on to the next stage of training to become a solicitor or a barrister.

Franco Rizzuto: “Work experience opportunities and IT skills that are developed as part of a degree that meets the rigorous high standards of the Law Society, will result in making our law graduates highly employable.”

John Cater, Principal and Chief Executive of Edge Hill, welcomes the introduction of the new programme. He said: “This is an excellent example of our strategy of combining academic excellence and professional accreditation. It is a logical next step in the development of our range of courses designed to prepare students for careers in established and developing vocational areas.
Edge Hill graduates already work in areas as diverse as healthcare, journalism, teaching, psychology, performing arts and business. I look forward to seeing them joined by future solicitors and barristers, who have studied at Edge Hill.”
