A partnership approach to attracting more maths teachers is being led by Lancashire’s Edge Hill College of Higher Education, with the pilot of a new course to help more people gain a deeper knowledge of maths, before they embark on a teacher training programme.

The Maths Enhancement course is to be piloted in the North West by Edge Hill and Liverpool Hope University College and in the South by University College, Chichester, on behalf of the Teacher Training Agency. The course is aimed at those without maths degrees who wish to train as secondary maths teachers.

Suitable candidates may include those with A level or equivalent maths qualifications, or those who have studied some element of maths beyond degree level, and have experience of using it in their job.

Candidates will receive a bursary worth £150 a week while they are on the six month course, that starts in January, and some may be eligible for financial help whilst they train in their first years of teaching.

Steve Feller, Head of Mathematics at Edge Hill hopes that the course will encourage many more potential maths teachers to take up teacher training.

He said: “The Maths Enhancement course will offer intensive training to those who are keen to teach maths, but perhaps don’t have the confidence in their subject area. The reduction in the numbers studying maths at degree level, has inevitably led to a shortage of teachers. Schemes such as this, aim to open up opportunities for those with degrees in other areas, but professional experience of working with maths.”

Most sessions take place at Liverpool Hope University College with one day each week spent at Edge Hill, offering candidates the chance to experience teaching and learning facilities at the Ormskirk Campus.
