JIVING LINDY HOPPERS LAUNCH NEW DRAMA DEGREE AT EDGE HILL

Edge Hill’s latest new performance course was launched to the sound of foot-stomping beats, when the Jiving Lindy Hoppers introduced the BA (Hons) degree in Drama, Physical Theatre and Dance at the Ormskirk Campus.

Around 50 sixth formers from Knowsley Community College and Deyes High School enjoyed the rhythmic sounds of finger clicking jazz when they tried out new jive dance moves led by the first company to kick off the Rose Theatre’s autumn-winter season.

Students spent the day and evening at the College of Higher Education’s Ormskirk Campus, where they toured the campus and took part in workshops with the Jiving Lindy Hoppers and Edge Hill drama tutors. To round off their visit they enjoyed an interactive Evening with the Jiving Lindy Hoppers at the Rose Theatre.

Jane Scott-Barrett is Course Leader for the new degree and Senior Lecturer in Dance, Drama and Physical Theatre, she said:

“The students did really well to attempt some quite challenging dance moves. They also experienced a taste of the sort of practical workshops that would form part of the new degree in Drama, Physical Theatre and Dance.”

The new programme is designed to develop a range of practical and theoretical performance skills, with some modules offering the chance to undertake full or small-scale production opportunities, and others offering work-based learning in the community or in schools.

The degree is one of the first undergraduate programmes available in the UK to offer dance and physical theatre throughout all years of study, and is also diverse, encouraging artistic and academic freedom, as well as the development of key transferable skills. This means that work beyond the fields of the performance industries becomes a realistic option for graduates.

Jane Scott-Barrett: “Students are benefiting from having ready access to a range of new facilities, including a modern dance studio and the Rose Theatre, Edge Hill’s venue for touring productions.”
