A NEW nursing degree will be available at Edge Hill College of Higher Education’s School of Health Studies from this September.

Applications are now being invited for places on the new BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing programme. Those graduating from the course will be awarded a Bachelor of Science degree and will be eligible to join the Professional Register as a Nurse.

This three-year, full-time course is an exciting development for the School of Health Studies, which already offers a wide range of diploma programmes in nursing, midwifery and operating department practice.

The new degree programme will combine theory and practical work. Students will be based at the School of Health Studies’ headquarters in the grounds of University Hospital Aintree, Liverpool, but will also spend time at Edge Hill’s Ormskirk campus.

Clinical placements will be available with Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust, University Hospital Aintree and the Walton Centre in Liverpool as well as the private and voluntary sectors and local Primary Care Trusts.

Course leader Janet Voss, deputy head, pre-registration programmes, said: “This is a great opportunity for the School of Health Studies to be able to offer a degree programme and we are looking forward to welcoming the first students.

“The School is already widely recognised as a provider of high quality education for health care professionals and this builds on that success.”

It is anticipated that a further degree programme, in midwifery, will be available from September 2003.

The School of Health Studies is one of the main providers of education for health care professionals in Merseyside and the North West. It has long-established links with a wide range of health and social care providers including NHS trusts and the voluntary and independent sectors.

In May 1999 the School of Health Studies received a Quality Assurance Agency Subject Review score of 22 out of 24.
