Over 100 Edge Hill students attended Liverpool Sound City 2019 to perform, film, shadow professionals or just enjoy the three-day event – all for free as part of the University’s partnership with the festival.

Music Production students Adam Charo, aka Podge, and David Hughes, aka Charity Shop Pop, were part of a showcase run by Edge Hill’s in-house record label.

Tanashe Musaka and Talib Jaden Smith, who perform as T x T-Gift, participated in the Levi’s Music Project. This involved working to develop their music with other young people in a purpose built studio with Mercury Prize nominee and headliner Loyle Carner. Their experience culminated in a performance on the main Sound City stage. Taneshe and Talib study on Media, Music and Sound.

In the run up to the festival Sound City provided opportunities to students including working with bands and artists, mentoring, talks, master classes, work experience opportunities, and live briefs. Examples include

  • Masterclasses on subjects such as ‘Bid Writing’ and ‘How to put on a Good Festival’  presented by event professionals from Sound City
  • Songwriting tips to from bands She Drew the Gun and Mamatung
  • A Transmedia Storytelling live brief given to students studying Media, Film and Television modules
  • Digital Marketing students making 10 second promotional videos to gain experience of working with music brands.

EdgeFWD/3rdEdge Dance Company performed their piece A love letter to humanity, A Celebration in Existing at All outdoors during the festival.

Eight students filmed live music magazine Trashed TV at Sound City + conference, capturing an exciting range of industry interviews.
